These projects exemplify the mission of the PWEF to bring innovation and educational enhancements to our children’s classrooms. Each one has a record of success and support from the school district.
Your help in funding means these projects can continue for another year and beyond. Please choose a portion, an entire project or even multiple projects to support.
FIRST Robotics
In 2005 Schreiber High School teacher, Don Schaefer took a diverse team of highly motivated students and created their rookie robot, Woody. Woody made it all the way to national competition, thus laying the groundwork for more student involvement and building more ambitious robots for future competitions.
Funding Opportunity:
Robot parts: $3,500; Competition: $5,000 each for regional annd national levels
SMART Boards™
Interactive whiteboard technology uses a touch-sensitive display that connects to a computer and digital projector. The teacher controls computer applications directly from the display, writes notes in digital ink and saves work to share later. This technology can be used for any subject. The District’s goal is a SMART board for every classroom teacher who can use one!
Funding Opportunity:
Every $5,000 gets a SMART Board installed.
The Blues at Weber
Created by Weber English teacher Jeff Moss, this program gives all 8th grade students the opportunity to study African-American history, poetry, art and music with songwriting workshops and performances by renowned Blues artist Little Toby Walker. Students write and perform their own blues songs.
Funding Opportunity:
One year of The Blues at Weber costs $3,000. Language Arts & Performance Workshops
Expressive Elocution and Storytime Theater are language arts performance workshops designed for older and younger elementary students. Port Washington parent and voice/drama professional Elise May uses her performance and elocution skills to enhance the language arts curriculum by improving concentration, focus, listening, linguistics and problem solving.
Funding Opportunity:
A 3-workshop series for one full grade district-wide costs $4,500.
The PWEF Education Support Center
This after-school program held at the Port Washington Public Library is for 3rd & 4th grade students in need of extra language arts support. Trained adult and high school volunteers work one-on-one to help with homework and develop strategies for completing assignments. Enrichment activities reinforce learning & social skills. Generous grants from the Slade Family and former Senator Balboni’s office will partially fund the Support Center for the next five years and donations are needed to make up the difference.
Funding Opportunity:
Every $1,000 extends the program one week.
